Can We Iron On Permanent Vinyl?

Permanent vinyl is not primarily suitable for fabrics, but the question is, can we iron on permanent vinyl? The simple answer is yes, you can. Read on to find out how you can do it safely to get the best results.

Before we delve into the topic of applying heat on permanent vinyl, it is imperative to understand its features and how it works.

Can We Iron On Permanent Vinyl?

What is Permanent Vinyl?

Permanent vinyl is a sheet made up of polyvinyl chloride with a strong adhesive and paper backing. It adheres to smooth, clean and dry surfaces, and presents high durability.

It is ideal for outdoor usage since it can endure unfavorable weather conditions. Its color does not fade easily and it does not crack or peel off when exposed to harsh environments.

Permanent vinyl is also applied on drinkware and utensils since it can withstand frequent contact with liquid. It is washable as well.

Though permanent vinyl can be removed in a few steps using a heat gun, it can damage or may leave adhesive residue behind on the surface.

And now the big question…

Is It Possible To Iron On Permanent Vinyl?

You may wonder if we can easily iron on permanent vinyl on a fabric or not. Well, the answer is, yes. You can absolutely iron on permanent vinyl. You may choose a heat press or a regular dry iron will work too, but make sure not to use the steam iron.

Having said that, the fact remains that permanent vinyl is not ideal for applying on the fabric. A better choice to work on the fabric would be heat transfer vinyl or HTV.

Though HTV is cheered upon to be used on garments, even permanent vinyl applied on fabric can last 6-8 years if properly taken care of. Its longevity also depends upon the excellence of the application process, and the quality and the condition of the fabric and the vinyl.

How To Iron On Permanent Vinyl

The process of ironing permanent vinyl onto a fabric is pretty simple. You follow the same steps that you do while working with regular vinyl namely designing, cutting and weeding. We mirror the HTV design when we apply it on a fabric but we will not do this with permanent vinyl.

After the design is final, apply transfer tape on top of it. Remove the paper backing that protects the adhesive and paste the design on the shirt where you want it to be. Burnish it with a squeegee or a scraper to remove creases.

Cover the design with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper and iron on it applying pressure. Do not move the iron back and forth. Apply heat and pressure evenly on the whole design.

Now it's time to remove the transfer sheet. Fold a corner of the transfer film diagonally and pull. Keep a tight fold, do not pull upwards. Work very slowly pulling back the transfer tape.

Once the tape is removed, your shirt is ready to wear and flaunt!

HTV Or Permanent Vinyl: What’s The Better Choice For Iron On

Though we have already mentioned that permanent vinyl can be ironed on with a heat press or regular iron, HTV is encouraged for fabrics or garments. Following are the features of the HTV that make it ideal for fabrics:

  • It is thin, durable and stretchable.
  • It can withstand multiple washes.
  • It stays on shirts and compatible fabrics for a longer period of time.
  • It has a heat-activated adhesive making it a better choice for ironing on fabrics.

Comparatively, permanent vinyl does not have these features. If it is ironed on, it may not be durable and when removed, may leave residue behind spoiling the shirt since it has a strong adhesive. Hence for fabrics, it is recommended to use heat transfer vinyl.

Conclusion

Hence we conclude that for fabrics, HTV will always be the best choice. If you want to experiment, you can use permanent vinyl for fabric related projects, but it will not give the same result. It is mainly used outdoors for advertisements, automobile modification, signs, labels and so on.

Permanent vinyl is also a good choice for drinkware like glasses, cups, tumblers or any utensil that is expected to come in contact with water.

So, yes, we can iron on permanent vinyl but we will recommend not doing so.
