Is Permanent Vinyl Dishwasher Safe?

For crafters, this is quite a predicament. The simple answer to this query is: No. Permanent vinyl is not dishwasher safe. But you can make it so. Read on to find out how.

Is Permanent Vinyl Dishwasher Safe?

When it comes to applying decals on utensils, vinyl can be a good choice. However, one should be mindful of the type being used and how it should be taken care of. Some vinyl films are permanent while others are removable. Since utensils have to be washed often, permanent vinyl is the best for them as it has strong adhesive and is more robust.

While permanent vinyl is waterproof, you cannot put utensils that have decals made with it in a dishwasher, especially the one with an automated heating system. Different dishwashers have varied water pressure and temperature parameters that affect the durability of the vinyl differently.

You have the option of washing a cup or a mug that has permanent vinyl decals on it in the dishwasher but don't anticipate the print to persist long. It will be susceptible to peeling. If you want your exquisite design to last longer, and plan on washing it in the dishwasher, add a sealant and cure it.

Why Should We Use Permanent Vinyl?

Permanent vinyl is an extremely durable material that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use. It also has a smooth, high-gloss finish that makes it ideal for use on drinkware and other utensils such as plates from which food is frequently scraped off.

Permanent vinyl is a versatile material that comes in a variety of colors, textures, and patterns. Using a glossy finish, matte, or glitter vinyl can look fantastic on any craft project. It can be cut into any shape or size, which makes it ideal for creating custom designs. It is commonly used on drinkware such as mugs, jars and tumblers.

Why Permanent Vinyl Is Not Considered Dishwasher Safe?

Permanent vinyl is not dishwasher safe because the decal may peel off when subjected to the heat inside the dishwasher. It has a strong adhesive backing that is designed to bond to a variety of surfaces, including metal, plastic, glass, and wood. Once applied, it creates a secure, long-lasting bond that is difficult to remove. However constant contact with hot water, steam and high temperature can detach it.

A dishwasher uses heat to perform its task of cleaning. Hot water is used to sterilize the dishes. When permanent vinyl comes in contact with it on a regular basis, the decal loses its tack. This is a gradual process. You may not see the damage immediately. If the decal is repeatedly cleaned in the dishwasher, it may begin to peel off over time.

Microwaves work on the same principle. A mug with a permanent vinyl decal printed on it cannot be microwaved. Utensils with vinyl decals should be washed with hands to ensure longevity.

Using Dishwashers With Heat Turned Off

Some dishwashers come with the option of turning off the heat. You can use these but with certain precautions. You can wash the mug or whatever utensil that has the permanent vinyl decal on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent and cool water, which should be sufficient to clean it properly. Once the cycle is complete, it's important to let the mug air dry completely before using it again.

Method For Making Permanent Vinyl Dishwasher Safe

The process is quite simple:

  •  Finalize the design that you have visualized on the software and cut it using your automated cutter such as Cricut or Silhouette. Do not mirror the image.
  • Weed out the negative vinyl using a weeding pen from Ahijoy. This will bring forth the actual decal.
  •  Apply transfer tape on the decal and smooth it out with a squeegee to remove creases and ensure adherence.
  • Clean the utensil on which you are applying the vinyl thoroughly using rubbing alcohol. There should be no dirt or grease on it.
  • Remove the backing of the vinyl and apply the decal on the utensil where you want it to be. Smooth it out with a squeegee applying firm pressure. The adhesive of the permanent vinyl is pressure sensitive. The more you apply it, the more strongly it will adhere to the surface.
  • When you are sure that the vinyl has adhered perfectly, remove the transfer tape slowly.
  • Once you have transferred the vinyl design on the utensil, allow it to cure for at least 24-72 hours before applying the dishwasher safe Mod Podge sealant.
  • Clean the utensil again. You might think that you did so thoroughly before applying vinyl but it needs another round of cleaning. Make sure that the vinyl is dry before sealant application.
  • Stir Mod Podge well, but do not shake it, as this can cause bubbles.
  • Apply a thin coat on the decal especially the edges and all over the utensil with a foam brush or a paintbrush with soft bristles. Do not just apply on the decal otherwise you will not get a smooth and even finish. The brush strokes should be in the same direction.
  • Let the first coat dry completely, which may take several hours depending on the temperature and humidity in your environment. You may speed up the drying process by using a blow dryer.
  • Once the first coat has dried, apply the second one of the Mod Podge in the same manner and allow it to dry completely as well. When it has dried, put the third coat of the sealant.
  • To ensure maximum durability, let the utensil cure for at least 28 days in a clean, dry place and leave it alone. Do not use it or expose it to water and other harsh elements. Just let it sit.

And you’re done! After the period has passed, your utensil with permanent vinyl on it is now dishwasher safe.

What Is The Lifespan Of Permanent Vinyl?

Permanent vinyl is designed to be durable and long-lasting, but its exact lifespan will depend on a variety of factors, including the quality of the vinyl, the conditions it is exposed to, and how well it is adhered to the surface.

Is Permanent Vinyl Dishwasher Safe?

In general, high-quality permanent vinyl that is properly applied can last for three to eight years, even with regular use. If it is sealed with a good quality sealant, it can last even longer. However, if the vinyl is exposed to extreme temperatures, moisture, or direct sunlight, it may begin to degrade more quickly.

To ensure the longest possible lifespan for permanent vinyl, it's important to choose a high-quality vinyl product, apply it carefully to a clean, dry utensil, once it has cured, wash it with hands and take care to avoid exposing it to harsh elements whenever possible. Regular cleaning and maintenance can also help extend the life of the vinyl and keep it looking its best.

Final Words

Hence it is proven that though permanent vinyl is strong and durable, it is not dishwasher safe on its own. If constantly exposed to the heat in the dishwasher, the decal will lose its tack and eventually peel off. If you are too busy to hand wash the utensils with vinyl decals, put sealant on them so that they last longer. You are well aware of the process now. Go ahead, seal your permanent vinyl and put it in the dishwasher without any worries.
