How To Use Transfer Tape With Vinyl

A seasoned vinyl crafter knows that in order to create a perfect piece of workmanship, it is imperative to have a premium quality transfer tape. If you have mastered its usage, your crafts will never go wrong. Here’s how you should use transfer tape with vinyl.

How To Use Transfer Tape With Vinyl

Transfer tape is used to apply your vinyl, sticker, decal or other printed material, easily and smoothly on the surface of your choice. Also known as application tape, it is a thin layer of film with an adhesive backing that is placed on top of the vinyl sticker or decal so that it can be easily applied to the substrate.

Different Types Of Transfer Tape

Transfer tapes are of two different types: clear tape and paper tape. You can use either to transfer your vinyl decals. Paper tape, as the name suggests, is basically a paper-based film with an adhesive backing. It is translucent and more flexible than a clear tape. It has three different tack levels: high, medium and low.

You can buy the one according to your requirement. It is versatile and also less expensive than a clear tape. The only drawback is that you cannot see through it so if your design is intricate or multi-layered, or you need to be sure about its exact placement, you might not find paper transfer tape very useful.

Clear tape is made up of plastic film and is transparent. The vinyl design underneath is clearly visible and it is easier to place it at the right spot on the substrate. Clear tape, however, is not versatile and is more expensive than paper tape.

Uses Of Transfer Tape

Transfer tape is a great tool for many projects, but it can also be used in ways that go beyond the obvious. Here are some of the ways you can use a transfer tape:

  • You can use transfer tape with vinyl to make your home or business look more attractive and professional.
  • You can use it as a template for tracing objects onto your vinyl.
  • It can be used as an adhesive for other materials like foam and fabric.
  • You can create stencils with it that you can use on multiple surfaces (like walls).
  • You can use it as a guide for cutting out shapes with a sharp blade or penknife.

Step-By-Step Guide To Using a Transfer Tape

A transfer tape is extremely easy to use. Mentioned below are the steps that need to be followed while using a transfer tape with vinyl.

Things You Need:

Step 1: Prepare Your Design

The first thing you need to do is to prepare your design using an electronic cutter or a pair of sharp scissors. If the design is intricate, we recommend using an electronic cutter for precision and perfection.

Step 2: Weed Off Extra Vinyl

Negative pieces have to be removed to bring forth the actual design. Using a weeding tool, remove all the unwanted pieces from the vinyl.

Step 3: Apply Transfer Tape

Peel the liner from your transfer tape and apply it to your design so that it covers it up completely. You can start from one side of your design or at the center. Press it down onto your vinyl. Make sure you apply plenty of pressure so that it will stay in place.

Smooth it out with a squeegee so that there are no creases or air bubbles trapped inside. This also adheres the vinyl design onto the transfer paper properly. Turn the vinyl over and burnish the other side with the squeegee.

Step 4: Transfer The Design On The Substrate

It’s time to transfer the vinyl design. Make sure the surface is smooth, clean and dry. To remove any dust particles or contaminants, clean the area with rubbing alcohol especially if it is plastic or glass.

Peel off the backing sheet from the vinyl carefully. The design has now adhered to the transfer tape. Lay it carefully on your project.

Step 5: Attach The Design To The Surface

Paste a small area of the design to the desired surface. It can either be the side of the design or the center. Use an application tool such as a scraper or a squeegee to burnish the design outwards from where you have attached.

Keep rubbing in outward motions until you are sure there are no creases or air bubbles trapped inside, and the design has adhered to the surface perfectly.

Step 6: Peel The Transfer Tape Away

Now it’s time to remove the transfer tape. Choose a corner and pull it at a 45-degree angle. It's also critical to pull tightly, nearly dragging it over the area you're working on.

If the vinyl also comes away with the transfer tape, paste it back and burnish it again to the project surface till you are sure that the vinyl has adhered properly, then peel away the transfer tape again.

The Final Word

Voila! You have done an amazing job. Your exquisite piece is ready to behold and win praises from everyone!
